Nvidia: Still on top?

NVIDIA has rocked the stocks with its meteoric rise over the past 2 years. Since its 2-year low of $10.80 per share in 2022, NVIDIA has been riding the AI boom to the stars, still cruising high at $138.00 per share as of October 24th. However, much controversy has arisen from whether NVIDIA’s 15 minutes of fame is over, or if it’s here to stay for the long run.

NVIDIA currently standing strong at 2nd highest in market cap, trails behind Apple, a giant of the tech world. But that could soon change. The Bank of America has some strong opinions regarding NVIDIA, reflected in their recent decision to raise their price target for the stock from $165 to $190. That would value this current ~3.39 trillion-dollar company at a titanic ~4.7 trillion-dollar company, a market cap unheard of in the stock world. The BofA believes that NVIDIA’s generative AI features in their chips are not a short-term disruption in the tech world and have implications that could lead to serious longer-term growth. In fact, Vivek Arya, BofA Securities senior semiconductor analyst, spoke recently on how NVIDIA’s stock is being “traded at one times less [than] earnings growth” while an average of the Magnificent 7’s stocks is currently trading at “1.9 times their average earnings growth for next year.” While it may be surprising, NVIDIA is currently very undervalued in comparison with its competitors in the tech space, and it's due to receive a more fitting valuation any time now.

Founder and manager of the Duquesne Family Office Stanley Druckenmiller fell prey to the now false narrative of NVIDIA’s stock pop being predicted to dwindle as he sold off all 400 million of his shares in the stock by August of 2024. He told Bloomberg, “It was a big mistake.”

In the world of fancy chips and frantic buzz over AI, AMD has been seen as a possible competitor in stock prospects with NVIDIA. At least for now, AMD will not be competing with NVIDIA directly. Simply put, NVIDIA is significantly broader in its business approach as compared to AMD. They have an entire infrastructure built around solidifying their domination in the chip and AI world. AMD is not so far-reaching and as a result, is taking its own slice of the AI “pie.”

While the future is somewhat unknown, certainly, NVIDIA won’t be leaving the spotlight any time soon.
